Baseball's First Indian: Sockalexis
Thursday, May 9th, 7pm
Louis Sockalexis was the man who inspired the nickname for the Cleveland professional baseball team in 1897 and paved the way for other pioneer American Indian baseball players, like Jim Thorpe and Hall of Fame pitcher Charlie Bender.

Meet local author Ed Rice, author of “Baseball’s First Indian, Louis Sockalexis: Penobscot Legend, Cleveland Indian” a biography of the first Native American to play Major League Baseball. He will present a talk to raise awareness of the Louis Sockalexis Monument Organization, a nonprofit dedicated to building a monument in Maine to honor the athlete.
